Math

 

Mathematics is used every day, by everyone, in every endeavor. As such, mathematics serves all other sciences and disciplines. In the Springfield School District, emphasis in the early grades is placed on knowing and using basic arithmetic facts, without the use of a calculator. These basic skills are important for student confidence and the ability to progress to higher levels of mathematics and everyday living. In the middle grades these skills are enhanced with the knowledge necessary to successfully complete high school mathematics courses. Highly motivated students are able to complete college level classes, such as Advanced Placement Calculus, Advanced Placement Statistics, and Mulit-variable Calculus, while still in our high school. The dedicated and knowledgeable staff is eager to assist students from the moment they begin at Springfield until their graduation from Jonathan Dayton.

Advanced Placement & Honors Courses

Students who perform at the highest levels in mathematics can take courses at the honors level in Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus, Statistics & Probability. Advanced Placement courses offered are AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics (2008-2009). Students must receive a teacher’s recommendation to register for an Advanced Placement or Honors class and must satisfactorily complete a summer assignment to enter the course in September. The Honors courses require students to be independent thinkers and learners. An honors course moves at a much faster pace and covers additional material compared to the college preparatory level. Students are expected to have a strong grasp of previous course material so they can focus on a more challenging exploration of the material. Advanced Placement courses in Calculus and Statistics (2008-2009) allow students who have completed the courses at the Honors level the opportunity to earn college credits by taking the College Board Advanced Placement exam. The Calculus BC course exam allows students to earn 6 credits of college calculus while the Statistics exam offers 3 credits of college statistics. Students are expected to have exceptional study habits, be self-motivated learners and have the ability to keep up with a fast-paced course.

Course Placement Review

Students who disagree with their teacher recommendation can work with their guidance counselor to file a course placement review. The department supervisor will examine the course placement review and make a final decision regarding placement. The deadline for all course placement reviews is June 1st of the academic school year.

Calculator Policy

Students will be required to bring a calculator to their math class as part of the materials needed for the class.
