Community Update 05/21/2021

May 21, 2021

Dear Springfield Public Schools Community,

We hope you and your family are enjoying this wonderful time of year and are preparing for a beautiful weekend!

On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) released guidance related to mask wearing throughout the state.  The purpose of this letter is to provide an update to our staff and community regarding new mask-wearing protocols in Springfield Public Schools.

In Executive Order No. 241<https://nj.gov/infobank/eo/056murphy/pdf/EO-241.pdf>, Governor Murphy removed the requirement for the wearing of masks in “outdoor public spaces” but continued the mandate for wearing masks in indoor facilities.  Additional guidance provided by the NJDOH<https://www.nj.gov/education/broadcasts/2021/may/19/NJDOHTravelandMaskingClarificationsforK-12Schools.pdf> clarified that while masks are not required for events outside of school hours, they strongly recommend that unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks in outdoor settings.

As per this guidance, masks will no longer be required for outdoor extracurricular activities.  Consistent with the guidance provided by the NJDOH, the district strongly recommends that unvaccinated students, staff, parents, and visitors engaged in extracurricular outdoor activities continue to wear masks.

Masks will continue to be required for all students and staff during school hours on school grounds, whether indoors or outdoors, consistent with the Executive Order No. 241 and NJDOH guidance identified above.

Have a great weekend!
