To help facilitate valuable conversation about the complex, and sometimes uncomfortable, themes and events discussed in American Idiot, we (the directors) have combed through the script and developed the following list of guided discussion questions. While the show’s writing is understandably intended for a mature audience and not for young children, the thematic content of the show is all too real for much of today’s teenage and young adult population.  The scaffolding of American Idiot provides a safe haven for illustrating the dangers of blindly following the majority, which oftentimes falls at the expense of losing one’s own individuality.  We hope that these questions will help you and your loved ones open doors of discussion that may have been otherwise closed.  Ultimately, we hope that the experience of coming to watch American Idiot, of watching the decisions and consequences of its young adult characters, helps to strengthen the lives and relationships of the most important characters, those sitting amongst our audiences.
