Dear Springfield Public Schools Community,
Apple has released a critical security update affecting all users with a district-issued Apple computer (laptops and desktops). It does not apply to mobile devices (iPads or iPhones) and non-Apple devices.
The update is available to download via the Self Service App, located in your application folder. You will find a step-by-step guide to help you through the process below.
The update fixes multiple security flaws recently found within the Mojave Mac OS. For this reason, we strongly recommend you install the update as soon as possible.
Read the instructions carefully before to ensure a successful update.
The process will not modify any of your current files or set ups, such as your browser’s bookmarks, if the instructions are followed.
The update can take from 30 minutes or up to 1 hour to install, and must be executed without interruption to be successful, so please plan accordingly.
Keep your computer connected to a power source to avoid interruption.
You can read more about the security fix here, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212147, or search the Apple Website for info about Security Update 2021-001 Mojave
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to the tech department through the Springfield Web Help Desk program (https://webhelpdesk.springfieldschools.com).
Before you begin:
Plug your laptop into your charger and/or verify that you have at least 50% power. Do not start the update until you have at least this much charge in your battery.
Close out of all work and open applications before clicking install, as your computer will need to restart during the update.
Open Self Service
To find/open Self Service please follow these instructions and the picture below for visualization of where to click.
Click on Finder, it is the Blue Smiley Face on your toolbar.
Select the Applications folder inside of the Finder window, then find and double click on Self Service
Find the “Mojave Security Update 2021-001” inside of Self Service. It is under the “Operating Systems” tab.
This screen appears after clicking install. Read the pop-up then click Install again. Please leave Self Service open while it downloads. It may take up to 30 minutes to fully download onto your computer, before the installation process begins.
When it finishes the download, Self Service will tell you that the item is no longer available. Please wait until the computer restarts on its own. It may restart instantaneously without showing that the item is no longer available.
IMPORTANT: Your computer will automatically go dark, restart and begin the update. Do not interfere with this process in any way, or remove the power. The computer may restart multiple times during the update and may show nothing on the screen for over 5 minutes while the update occurs.
Note: You may see a screen like this opposed to the Apple logo with a bar below.
The screen may go black multiple times during the update. The update is complete once you are back at the login screen or AUP. This can take up to an hour to finish.
After signing in, you may be asked some start up questions such as if you would like Siri enabled. Please unselect the checkbox and select continue. (Siri is disabled at the system management level for students, leaving it on will interfere with other system permissions)
