IMPORTANT: Updated Policy of the Springfield Free Public Library

The Springfield Free Public Library policy requires that children under the age of ten (10) be under the direct supervision of a responsible parent, guardian, or other caregiver who is aged sixteen (16) or older during all times that said children are present in the library. This policy will become effective September 1, 2019.

The primary purpose of the library‘s interior spaces is to provide a public facility where people may read, study, and work quietly. The library should not be expected to serve as a de facto provider of after school child care. Children aged ten and above who come to the library during after school hours are expected to maintain a level of decorum that is appropriate for the facility and that is respectful of others who are in the library. Parents/guardians need to reinforce the library’s policies with their children; parents/guardians also need to be aware of the fact that children who willfully fail to meet this standard will be told by library staff to leave the building, regardless of outside circumstances. Children who deliberately flaunt library rules regarding eating in the library or bringing in beverages other than bottled water will also be told to leave the building.

Questions regarding library policies should be referred to Dale Spindel, Library Director, at 973 376-4930, ext. 227 or dspindel@sfplnj.org.
